on motherhood

my friend meg has tagged me along with four others to talk about five things they love about being mothers.
and since mother's day is coming up, it is only fitting that i take a few minutes to respond as best i can.

one:
motherhood is a falling in love kind of love that is unlike anything else i have ever experienced. and its depths and breadth know no boundaries.
is this a good thing?
well, yes and no.
it's exhilarating, yes.
it's daunting as well.
because a love that wide and deep has got you.
forever and ever.
unending.
and not that i'd ever want to let go of that, but it's humbling to love like that just the same.

two:
i am her history.
i am a touchstone.
i am home to her.

three:
motherhood is a challenge.
and that's a good thing for me.
full of lessons.
stretching me and growing me beyond what i thought i was ever capable of.

four:
watching her grow and change and becoming a wonderful human being
has been the most amazing thing i have ever witnessed.
it has enriched my life immensely.

five:
she is the product of the loving union between me and the big guy.
because of us,
there is she.

and so now i am tagging you moms out there to do the same.
share your insights.
because being a mom is a wondrous thing.

To quote Diane Keaton in some recent chic-flick when confronted by her daughters about her constant meddling: "One day you'll know! Just wait! This is an impossible love!" So true.
This motherhood thing brings out primal, protective instincts that a lot of us probably had no clue lived in us. Right now, it's more about physical protection since I have little ones. But one day, I know it's going to be more about trying to shelter them from the mean girls and boys of the world. Kudos to all you mama bears out there like me! Repeat after me: "It's my job to keep you safe, Honey. Now get down from the roof of the car."

This is heart-wrenching. In a good way. I'm not a mother, nor will I ever be now, but I can feel your love here and it's beautiful. Very beautiful.

That was a great post. Very touching and quite a mountain to climb.

Oh, I did see the Soloist. I have to say it wasn't exactly what I had expected. I did admire it a great deal. Something about the way it was told, was a bit off putting, but really it was a good film. My friend was telling me that in the real story, the narrator wasn't a drunk and not divorce..and his wife was a teacher..and in that end..they start a family.
